To help is in our interactions with horses I feel it is crucial to recognize the tendency to judge and critique which im turn can hinder the development of harmonious bonds with those we share space. By acknowledging the destructive nature of judgment and adopting a mindset of understanding we nuture empathy, awareness, and mutual growth.

I want to share with you the effective strategies for managing judgment and its impact on our horses’ well-being that I explore with my clients.

• Cultivate Self-Awareness: If I take a moment to reflect on my thoughts and emotions when working with the horses in my care, it gives me a moment to adjust. Reminding ourselves that horses, like humans, have unique personalities, experiences, and limitations helps dial down the intensity and allows for appreciation.

• Practice Empathy and Compassion: Both of these are powerful tools in managing judgment. If I am having a dialogue with a horse that is struggling, I try to put myself in their hooves, figuratively speaking, and try to perceive the world from their perspective. By empathizing with their needs and emotions, we can develop compassion for their behavior and respond appropriately.

• Embrace Open-Mindedness: By avoiding rigid thinking that insists there is only one right way, we become receptive to new ideas, techniques, and perspectives. Embracing diversity allows us to learn and grow, benefiting both ourselves and our horses.

• Focus on Learning: I view every interaction with the horses in my care as an opportunity for growth and education. Approach challenges with curiosity and a desire to understand that every horse is an individual with their own unique learning pace and preferences.

• Seek Professional Guidance: I am never shy about seeking out someone who can help me become a better person. Find someone who can provide valuable insights, mentorship, and support. They can help you navigate your own biases, uncover underlying beliefs, and develop a more empathetic approach towards your life with (and without) horses.

I believe that managing judgment is crucial for nurturing a positive and productive relationship with our horses. By cultivating these five practices, we can create an environment conducive to mutual understanding and growth.
